The views service monitor is meant to help administrators with monitoring and troubleshooting the Microsoft Project Server 2003 views service:

·        Provides performance counter for the processing time of the current XML file

·        Provides performance counter of the avgerage to to process an XML file

·        Proviodes performance counter of the number of XML files in the queue.

·        Provides performance counter of the number of XML files in the viewdrop folder.

·        Provides performance counter of the total number of XML files processed while views service mon was running.

·        Keeps track of XML files that have been processed as well as files currently waiting in the queue.

·        Provides e-mail notiifactions when any of the above counter execeed a user configued threshold.

·        Provides a log of all files processed.

This tool will not speed up the processing of XML files, nor fix files that fail to successfully publish, however in those situations this will make it easier to identify files that fail to process successfully and fix those accordingly.

This requires the .Net 1.1 Framework and Microsoft Office 2003 Project Server. 

How does this tool work?

The views service monitor runs as a service on the views server and acts as a fowarding service for the management of XML files into the viewdrop folder and it will will drop one XML file at a time into the viewdrop folder when it detects that the folder is empty. It will feed the viewdropfolder one XML file at a time as well as capture details outside of the vwnotify serice about the time it takes for the XML file to be processed it also archives the completed XML files for troubleshooting purposes.  Also once a day it will also delete old log files and old archive files.  It will also restart the views service after a given number of XML files have been processed.
